How good are dual proc systems

Like when i'm copying big files from one IDE hard drive to another it takes a lot of CPU and stuff and makes the system crawl (even 1.5ghz+ systems). Will Dual CPU help this? I know SCSI will, but would like to know if dual proc will also.

with dual processors you will need an OS that support it (NT, 2000, XP pro)
it does help with dual.

I used to have dual xeon 400MHz w/1mb cache with ultra160 10KRPM hd.
now upgrade my system to AMD 2000+ with same hd.
Both used to run on XP pro.

Boot up time, dual is alot quicker, once in gui I can start using right away, with single i wait about 5sec.
ms office apps launch faster on dual.
Install apps quicker dual.

but I do see performance increase in 3-d gaming with amd 2000+.

Note: higher cpu speed or dual does not constitute higher performance.
if you have pentium IV 2.4GH with ATA33 hd, doesn't do any better.
faster cpu + faster memory + faster hd (ultra 320) + faster video card = great performance but $$$$$$$

If you do real work on your system, a dual will make a difference. If you just "dink around" then you're not going to find it any faster.

While it's true a dually won't help in copying files, your system won't slow to a crawl when doing so. CocaCola5 said it best, if you really use your computer a dually will allow you to be more productive.

The following is in my signature on forums that permit the length: "If the supercooled, overclocking crowd discovers how fast duallies feel, there will be a stampede to build SMP rigs that will make the California gold rush look like a few little old ladies pushing shopping carts at the supermarket."

What I've always wondered is why there isn't any dual systems out there in the stores. I'm sure that there is a market for them and the allure of 2 processors would be enough for people with the $$$.

I'm afraid the general public is too price conscious for duallies, let alone the misconceptions about how SMP can benefit the heavy computer user even without software optimized for SMP. I would love to see some SMP rigs offered to the general public but from a price perspective, it's going require the major manufacturers to embrace AMD unless the P4 dually becomes a reality.

Byte - Overclockers has a great SMP Forum and of course there is 2CPU. You may want to spend some time researching the subject, particularly at 2CPU. There is a ton of information on AMD duallies buried in some of the old threads.

There are no dual Athlon boards with dual channel DDR.
