How good are Apple iBooks ? ?

lets say compared to a P4 M 1.8ghz Dell ?

is a 800mhz G3 processor equivalent ?

the new ibooks that are out and even the older ones look so sexy~ with OSX

I might get one

any opinions ? advice ?

An 800mhz G3 is slower than a p4 1.8. I have one (mine's 700mhz).

Not as much processing power, but I don't need a 2ghz laptop.

I know what you mean, the new apples are so sexy they make me want to wet my pants 😉

Stop reading right here. No one knows which is actually faster, no one ever will. You'll just get a 5 page flame fest. The Mac is not a gaming machine so it doesn't really matter anyway. You just have to decide if you're comfortable paying Apple's price premium to get OS X, which most agree is a superior OS to Windows.

The one thing that is overlooked when comparing speed is that OSX does not need a 2ghz chip to run smoothly. you cant really compare the chip speeds since the architecture is so different. I have a tibook with a G4 667. It is blazing quick for what i need it for. (Not games, but it can play Warcraft 3 really good) I used a g3 300 with 10.2.4 this weeekend and it responded quickly to everything.

The G3 is still a good chip, but you should get the G4 instead. much quicker chip. (mainly for guaranteed support for quartz extreme. QE needs 16 megs of video mem to run and i forget where they switched from 8 meg cards) The ibook is great since it is virtually indestructible as it will boot after you run over it with a car and they really do have 3 hours of battery life.

The Ti Books have multihead support and you can hack an ibook to do it fairly easy. It already has the hookup and it is only a software modification.

if you are switching from a pc, it will may seem a little bit slower in internet browsing, but that is changing.

Sorry im rambling..Overall, i would get the 12 inch powerbook since it is a g4 and one hell of a computer, but that is just me.

Quartz extreme works fine on G3s as lnog as they have 16megs of video ram or more (you can actually hack it to require less.)

As far as day to day apps go, I'd say that my 1ghz powerbook is about as responsive as a midrange (1.4ghz+) PC desktop. Apples to..uhhh....oranges I guess.

Now, when I run WindowsXP in VirtualPC it was kind of sluggish until I tweaked the performance and gave it more RAM.. it runs XP at the speed of a sluggish PIII lappy.
