Just take a quick stroll around that neighbourhood around 10:30pm on a week night and you'll KNOW

Yeah it is, that's why im asking how bad it is. All I've heard is that harlem on the west side (west of morningside park) is not bad, because it's all columbia kids. But east of morningside is the real harlem and pretty bad. Can anyone confirm?

Try Brooklyn.
I would not live that high up, but to each their own.

You will have a hard time finding a 4 bedroom for that price, Not even in the bronx.

if you find a 4 bedroom place for 1k-1200, it'll definitely be in a ghetto neighborhood.

hmm i think we're gonna shoot for roosevelt island - it seems like a really nice community and you get a lot more for the same amount of money. I'm guessing the commute is gonna suck, but ill trade gym + tennis courts + outdoors crap for that.

Confirmed. 110 on the East side runs along the projects.

Living on Roosevelt Island will suck. You are SOOOOOO close to everything NYC has to offer and it will be a pain in the ass to get to any of it.

Try Hoboken or Brooklyn

110th and Lex is spanish harlem. What do you expect from one of the worst neighborhoods in NYC?

Edit: Also if you're looking for a 4 BR place, try looking on Craigslist. A few months back I found many nice 4 BR places in SoHo in your price range.

Roosevelt Island is not bad at all. I play softball there quite a bit during softball season. A little dead though. Commuting to Manhattan is not as bad as you think as you can take the subway (F train) or the tram. Off hours though may take a while and cabbing it will get expensive as you have to go to the Queens side to get on the island.

As for East/Spanish Harlem, I have a friend who lives up there and he wrote this in a blog entry from last year:
East Harlem is fantastic!

Growing up in Queens, we never went to Harlem. It was always the scary place north of Manhattan that no one spoke about, except as a place to "not end up accidentally".

Anyway, I've been spending some time up there lately and have made some SHOCKING discoveries!

1. People actually live there
2. There are many nice shops and restaurants
3. The houses there are very, very nice. Big and roomy, you won't find whole-floor apartments converted into 9 studios
4. Some people even own whole brownstones.

It's really shocking. The streets are wide, the buildings are modern or beautiful pre-wars. I just don't understand why everyone wants to pay ridiculous rents to live downtown (as in, below 90th street) when you could pay much less living up town.
OTOH, I served on a grand jury a few years back and 90% of the cases I heard were "buy and busts", most of which took place in that neighborhood. The neighborhood may have changed since then though.

I thought it was per person, when I was looking at apartments in manhattan a few years ago it was like $2000 for a studio.

i dont see how spendin 1200 per person for a 4 bdrm in a decent location is going to be impossible to find in manhattan...

if you can, it'll probably be easier to find 2, 2 bdrm places and with that budget you can definitely find a nice 1 bdrm convertible (or even a pure 2 bdrm place).

It depends on your definition of ghetto. If you consider poor minorities living in projects with high crime rate (higher than avg for nyc) then it's ghetto.

Did you read the news about how an NYU kid was just killed when he ran into traffic because he was being chased by 13 year olds looking to rob him? This happened in East Harlem.

I used to travel up to 116th St. and 2nd Ave. every weekend. It's not fun to walk around alone in broad daylight. I drive down everyday through east harlem and you'll notice a HUGE change when you get to 96th Street (Carnegie Hill Area). If you don't want ghetto, live below 96th St, but you'll be paying exorbitant prices.
