I am going for a cheap setup that will eventually have an X2 4400+ (christmas....MAYBE)

Here it is so far

DFI NF4 Ultra-D (moddable to SLI)
Venice 3000+ (2.75ghz)
2X512 DDR400

So far I have one 6600gt, but was considering getting another for BF2. Will it help and will it be able to play new stuff when multithread games come out and I get a X2. Thanks for the help.

Sorry, but SLI is usually a complete waste of money, especially with cards doubling performance or close to it every year.

The way i could ever recommend SLI is if you have to have the absolute best...

IOW, get a 6800GT or X800XL.

Thing is, I dont have much money. I dont need to run the games at highest settings, but I like to have decent frame rates.

Then get one 6600GT or spend a bit more & double your performance with an X800XL :)

Hey Jello long time no see :)

Yeah, I've been around, but not my usual night crew hours... I have to work at 5:30am on weekdays (but I have off tomorrow :D)

You are missing the point. I just need something that will work for stuff. I have a 6600gt right now, and it runs BF2 at reasonable settings. In the future, if I am making due with just one 6600, will another help if I maintain the same settings I have now. I want to avoid having to swap out to new cards all the time.

i think i'd wait and see. my 6600gt and p4 2.4c ran bf2 decently. you'll see a gain, certainly, but for $150? i think i'd wait it out and see how the market goes with the new cards.

I'd wait until you're not satisfied with the 6600gt's performance and then decide what's the best option at the time for your money.

Well I just bought a new x800xl for $200 so I will try that and sell it if I dont think it is worth it. I have a bad case of buying spontaneously this last week.

IMO, SLI just doesn't make sense from a financial perspective. When the time comes, sell your GT and upgrade to a faster single card with more memory.

That's a great price for an XL. You should be able to sell your GT for a good amount, so your upgrade cost will be pretty low (less than $100) for a card that should double your framerates at high settings.

Sorry Rollo, but there aren't a lot of people that agree with you & your SLI being a great value.

Get over yourself and your opinion. SLI is a waste unless you have to be a braggart that lives on forums and loves to brag to geeks. The rest of the real world can do without SLI or Crossfire.

Featurewise, SLI'd 6600 GT's are very futureproof (only lacking the transparency AA modes, (and I'm willing to bet a way will be found to enable these on GF6 series eventually))

Performance wise, they will be only adequate in the future. Best you can hope for is 6800GT performance, but GF7 is already here and midrange/budget versions will follow.

So, your setup will play everything likely to come out until the next generation of GPU's designed for WGF 2.0 hits, just not necessarily as fast as you might like. The fact that 6600GT's have only 128mb of memory is another negative factor, for me at least.

That's risky since the cards may not have the same bios or board layout.

Anyway, I agree with Pete. For those without deep pockets, SLI is BS. Rollo on the other hand has DEEP Pockets sporting 2 (two) 7800s just a few days after the release to run in his SLI system.

Sorry Rollo, but there aren't a lot of people that agree with you & your SLI being a great value.

I'm open to your explanation of why it isn't a good value, other than "because it's not".

Since the only thing SLI provides is additional framerates, and for the most part all any high end video solution provides is additional framerates, could you please provide us with some links to benchmarks that show the performance increase SLI gives as "bad value" compared to other upgrades that you consider a "good value"?

Or are you just one who thinks that while the performance is there, that's too much money to spend for it.

I can tell you this- upgrading your cpu, hdd, or memory will NEVER give you the NEAR the kind of performance boost SLI will. An A64 3000+ with 6800GT SLI will outperform a FX57 or X2 with a 6800Ultra.

That is VALUE. When you can add a second $300 card and get 30-90% more frames, you are not being "ripped off".
