How feasible is retinal scan technology (like in Minority Report) in the near future?

I know such technology exists, but not widespread like how it is in the movie Minority Report (obviously science fiction/fantasy).
But I wanna live to see that happen, within the next 50 years or so, if it ever does.

I just think the world would be so much safer and security much better and easier if you could track where everyone goes.
Criminals would no longer be able to run and hide.

Of course all this comes at the sacrifice of our own privacy.

It's more widespread than you think. Mostly at secure locations (duh, I know).

Well considering my very limited experience with retinal scanners, it will still be a while before they become anything like those in Minority Report.

The ones I've seen and used all require you to place your eye in a very narrow field relative to the camera. Sometimes, you have to place it right next to the camera. Then and only then can it scan you.

And I really don't want technology that is that pervasive. I mean, do you remember when he walked into the Gap? Or walking down the street with every single add acting like it was talking directly to him?
I don't want it to be known exactly where I am at all times. I like my privacy. I like being able to escape without having to run to Montana.
Not to mention the tremendous security protocols we are going to need to develop if a system like this is instituted. Can you imagine how destructive it would be if someone could hijack your retinal scan? I mean, the computer is never wrong, right?

Oh well, I guess I am in the minority now. Hell, nearly half of the United States thinks the 1st Amendment goes to far now a days.
