how fast will this go and how do i overclock it??

ok here goes...

i have 2 memory sticks, one is a 512mb PC3200 DDR 400Mhz, the other one is a 512mb PC2100 DDR (i dont know the speed though, could it be 266Mhz? because i saw another stick when i ran a search on google that said 512mb PC2100 DDR 266Mhz).

so the first question would be, does the second stick run at 266Mhz?

another question... what is better? running both sticks ..thus 1GB of Ram at 266Mhz (as it will run at the slower speed i assume)

or running simply the 512mb PC3200 at 400Mhz

third question, assuming it's better to run 1 GB of Ram , can i overclock the 2nd stick to say..300Mhz? if so how do i overclock the 2nd stick?

btw i use an Abit NF7 motherboard

and i am using an XP 1800+ , which i overclocked to 1.917ghz (166 x 11.5) ~ 2ghz (166 x 12)

i used to run it at 166 x 12 but yesterday when i was playing CounterStrike it shut down saying it experienced some error twice so i figured i'd go down to 11.5 multiplier and it seems kind of stable, although it was stable running @ 12 before too....until yesterday even though i played CS before too, oh well i'll experiment between the two multipliers.

Wow where to begin....

1) Yes pc2100 is 266mhz

2) I would not mix these unmatced pairs as this could have major stability issues

3) 1gb is a great upgrade in performance in mny things but this 1gb upgrade may be more headaches then it is worth...

4) I am not sure how picky amd dual channel is so I don't know if it may run altogether....It is not like it will revert to the lower speed it may just be you will have to run a lower speed to get it to even run or post....There is a good chance 166fsb will not even be possible at all and with 2 unmatched sticks I bet gaining much stability over 133fsb may altogether be difficult....

I say sell and get a match to your pc3200 stick....drop multiplier to 10 and boost fsb to 200 if you can get it to run...bump vcore up if you are not above 1.8v yet and boost the vdimm a bit as well....

EDIT: one more thing, when i increase the FSB, should i do it by the steppings of : 133, 166, 200mhz? or can i raise it like a random number of.....say ..... 170mhz?? because my bios supposely can raise it by 1mhz at a time, but i never heard of such a fsb #. thank you

btw, what's a good vdimm number to raise it to? or what's the default? because i can't remember if i might've raised by accident before :x

wow good detailed stuff on the OCing the cpu, i'm going to write this down so i can follow the applied changes

and i guess i'll leave the pc2100 out i was gonna use it temporarily until i get another CPU for my other computer as that computer's CPU broke somehow

I usually bump it up 5mhz at a time until i lose stability, then if i cant figure out how to achieve stability at that speed (raising the fsb, vdimm, vcore, mem dividers etc) ill bump it down 5mhz and leave it there.

Good programs to test stability imho are 3dmark 2001 loops, Memtest86, and Prime95.

my vcore.....core voltage was apparently set at 1.5v!....the default

sooo...i did a User Define

and set the following

CPU system

cpu clock : 200mhz
multiplier: 10.5 V
AGP Frequency: 66Mhz (should i change that??)

Core Voltage : 1.8 V
DDR SDRAM Voltage: 2.6 V (did not change it..should i?)
chipset Voltage : 1.6 V (did not change it..should i?)
AGP Voltage : 1.5 V (did not change it...should i??)

temp. @ 75 degrees (should i lower it? the next step i lower it to will be 65)

A rule with changing voltages is that you don't do it unless you need more power to squeeze out more performance. 1.5 to 1.8 Vcore is quite a jump for such a sensitive piece of engineering. It won't damage anything, more than likely, but it will shorten the lifespan of the CPU. I've only ever had to raise Vcore by that much during extreme overclocks -- more power can make an overclocked processor run more stably, but only if it's needed.

At this point I should add that I'm running my Thoroughbred B at 1.8 Vcore.

I'd advise leaving all those things like AGP frequency and voltage and chipset voltage alone, and only raising RAM and Vcore to correct stability issues.

yeah..Do not set it to 1.8v when you have only tested 1.5v and nearly had stability...I would bump it up to 1.55v first and if that does not work then go 1.6v....1.8v is safe as I know of plenty who have ran at that speed...Not immenent death but any ocing that results in vcore boost will shorten lifespan...how much and how much it equals to you in terms of your individual use in years is unknown...

I would bump vdimm up to 2.7 to 2.8v

I would bump vagp to 1.6v...totally safe

Yes leave agp set at 66mhz...much over that and stability issues with vid card may start surfacing....

i realized 66mhz is the lowest frequency , i think it goes up to 99mhz, but ok ill leave it as that and gradually increase it if its safe, any ideas?

Mixing ram is not so good as you can fry one or both sticks. I know as this has happened to me before with pc133 and pc100 ram on an old comp of mines. Though i was able to mix them on a biostar mobo w/a p3 733 with 0 stability issues, i tried on another comp and the pc100 was fried, literally, i smelled smoke and a few of the pins on the ram was burn (black). I suggest either get another stick of pc2100 or better yet another stick of pc3200.
