Ok i did some calculations
800mb/3.6mb p sec = 222.22 seconds = 3 minutes 45 seconds

I tested my 24x burner with nero and it said it is burning at 24x speed but the time it takes is about 7 minutes and 30 seconds, which is about 12x speed.
I repeated several times to make sure and everytime is the same.

Can anybody shed some light on this? Did i get a faulty burner?

Btw i got the CenDyne 24x10x40 (acer drive) with default windows XP drivers (the box never came with any drivers).

The speed at which the CD is burned is not fixed, it variates (increases) as you move to the outer tracks of the CD. A typical x24 will start x12 and move all the way up to x24.

Writers don't burn at rated speed starting at 16x as they use Zone-CLV technology.

Learn about Z-CLV technology here

Other than that there are two contents that must be burned onto a CD:

actual data
processing signal which is lead in and lead out

total disc capacity in minutes divided by sum of above two is actual average burn speed.

With that in consideration, an average 24x Z-CLV recorders should be able to record:

full 74min disc in ~3min 55sec(avg. 18.9x)

full 80min disc in ~4min 15sec(avg. 18.8x)

Some drive may take as long as twenty seconds longer. There is something wrong if it takes significantly longer and two most common causes are buffer under run protection is constantly kicking in(Smart Burn, Safe burn, BURN-Proof and such) due to data flow problem or drive chose to slow down due to dislike for certain media. (workaround: try better media)

Easy CD Creator and Nero both has a buffer gauge. Keep an eye on it next time you burn a disc. fluctuation between 80-100% is normal, but if it constantly flips back and forth between 0 and 100, your letting under run protection kick on way too often. You should also be able to identify this by looking at drive's LED flash patterns.

Workaround: burn at slow enough speed to not kick on under run protection. It's faster to run at consistent 12 or 16x than it is to burn at 24x with under run protection constantly kicking in. Enable DMA, try re positioning drive's configuration. PM me if you need further assistance with reconfig. It is important that you mention these: type of mobo, is it a RAID board?, what's on IDE channel at what settings?, detailed info on drives, Operating system.

Also depends on the CD-R rating methinks. Is it rated 24x or lower, so on and so forth.

Are you burnign cd to cd, or hd to cd. If you are going cd to cd it can take longer, especially if they are on teh same IDE channel. In fact i think it might take over 20 minutes if it was cd to cd on the same channel. Make sure you hard drive and burner are on seperate channels.

7:30 seems way too long. A 24x should finish a 700MB disc within 4:20. Your calculations are off because an 80min CD is 700MB not 800MB. And also 24x writers do not actually write 24x all the way, they use this technology called Zone-CLV which start the burning process at 16x, rises to 20x by the 4th minute, then reaches 24x by the 14th minute, the overall average speed comes down to about 22x. Even then, you still have to take in account the lead-ins and lead-outs, and also the TOC writing time. The reason Nero tells you it takes 7:30 or something is probably because you're using some media that's not certified for 24x burning, many burners can pick up the media's rated speed and refuse to write at above that rated speed. If you're copying a CD on-the-fly, you're also limited to your CD-ROM's speed, copying on-the-fly is usually slower than writing from an image on the hard drive, but on-the-fly saves you the time to extract the image. There are too many factors that can slow your CD-writer down, you just have to find out what those obstacles are if you want to burn with the maximum speed.

Thanks for all your replies.
First off.
1. I am burning on a TDK 32x media.
2. The buffer stays constant around 98% and the hardware buffer stays completely full until the very end.
3. I burned a full 80 minutes of music (from mp3) off my HD and everytime (about 5 tests) it took around 7 minutes and 30-40 seconds.
4. Im using the most updated Nero 5.5.7.8
5. my calculations are off but still shows my drive is slow.
6. I burned again but made Nero do a speed test and it shows that it burns the media anywhere from 10x to 12.5x but on the info screen it shows "started burning at 24x"
7. I plugged my trusty lite-on 12x burner and tested and it burns exactly at same speed!!!! about 7 min 30-40 seconds!!!!

on the ide it shows it is connected at MULTI WORD DMA 2
when i boot up the BIOS shows it is PIO mode 4
I havent burned any firmware or installed any software for it.
It is the Cendyne 24x10x40 (acer).

Any chance i got a retarded burner and need to take it back?

epox 8kha+
no raid
wd 60gig 7200 rpm ata 100
windows xp pro (with every update)

thanks for you help!!

Is there a function in Nero that you can tell it to burn at only 12x speed? If so, maybe that's what its stuck at and have to tell it to burn up to 24x.

I'm new to Nero and just briefly looked around at it's 'Preferences' to see if there is somthing there about it.
