How fast should files copy from one computer to another over a network

Im copying some files over to a new fileserver that i setup and its going at about 2.7MB per sec (max out at 3MB). This is over wired network (netgear 624?). Just wondering if these are normal/acceptable speeds.

EDIT:

100mbit, no other activity

Depends on whether it's a 10, 100, or 1000mbit network, and what other network traffic both computers are dealing with.

Sounds like it's a 100mbit network, in which case that's a little slow. Are you sure that both computers are dedicated entirely to transferring those files? You aren't downloading other stuff while you do that?

100Mbit and there is nothing else going on.

my transfer rates, even from my rig to another rig through the wired 100mbit router, didn't get close to the drives max transfer speed...

but then transfering from one HDD to the other doesn't do it either (for the slower drive)...

from mine to my gfs over 11g, it's agonisingly slow 😛

EDIT: looking at what the dude above me said, that was about what i was getting for the firs scenario...

Of course, if you have PIO mode enabled on a drive 😉

That's a 100Mbps network running at around 24Mbps if my quick/dirty math is right (which it prob isn't at 2:30 am) but at any rate it's faster than 10Mbps mode and it's not near what it should be for 100Mbps mode

Possibly a bad cable, the fact that netgears are pretty crap anyway. Try running a ping -t theothercomputer and see if you get packet loss.
