I am curious how fast when you get to desktop? The reason I ask is because everytime I boot my pc and wait for few sec say maybe 10 to 15 sec then to desktop it takes a lot of time like about a min I don't have anything like memory hog or anything too bloast.

I am running
ZoneAlarm Pro suite 6.5 with anti-virus
Google Desktop
Trillian Pro 3.1

But that was BEFORE they are load into memory.

If your system is that fast like my rig, what is your secret? I am not overclock anything I hate myself waiting for desktop with icons show up. I have been keep up to date, use diskeeper to defrag my hd and scan virus and use ccleaner to remove everything. What else did I miss?

Why would you want to turn your PC off?!? Just leave it on and use the spare cpu cycles for any number of different Disitributed Computing projects that TeAm AnandTech has participants in. :)

Mine boots to the desktop and loads the tray icons in about 55 seconds. post a HiJack This log so we can get a better idea what you're loading.

1. Clear your prefetch folder. ...yes this isn't supposed to do squat but it will get you a wicked fast boot one time then slowly settle back into a normal boot. If you have some items being prefetched you no longer use this will help. Otherwise it will just be a placebo.

2. Fire up msconfig and have a close look at your services tab (with MS stuff hidden by the checkbox) and the startup tab.

Also... don't reboot :p set your power settings so your monitor and drives fall asleep but otherwise just keep it running. I do this and schedule all my maintenance at night (backups, defrag, av scans)

Why would anyone possibly want to reduce their electric bills? Or the A/C bills during the summer?

Startup times for me, to go from power on to booting from the hard drive is 20 seconds. Then it's 30 seconds before I'm to the desktop with all the startup apps loaded. On startup, I've just got nvidia programs, modem programs, Creative sound card programs, two from Nero, and AVG.

Startup times get progressively worse as you use Windows from what I understand. The best thing to do is to partition about 20gb for the OS and format it every year or so. This is all just hear-say though. My experience has shown it to be true though. I'm running a 2 year old XP install with numerous hardware changes, software installs/uninstalls, driver installs/uninstalls etc. Over time your registry gets FUBAR'd and slows the loading process. If you aren't knowledgeable about registry cleaning then a reformat is the easiest route to take.

Windows will slow down if you run as an Administrator and frequently install/uninstall programs. If you run as Limited User and rarely modify programs it may be 90% as fast as it was when it came from the factory a few years later.

That is a LOT of misinformation. If you stay out of the dark alleys of the internet and don't load a bunch of junk it should *never* be necessary to format to gain performance.
Your registry does not goof itself up all by itself. It simply doesn't work that way.

Really the only thing that will cause your computer to get slower is the user adding more startup items and disk fragmentation. YOU can make your OS slower, it won't make itself slower.

Have you considered hibernation? I rarely shutdown, just hibernate and continue the next day..

Mine takes 4+ minutes from boot logo to a usuable desktop. I've ZoneAlarm Pro, NOD32, Notebook Hardware Control, SpywareBlaster, and SpywareGuard loaded at startup. I've most never-used Services disabled and the startup locations cleaned. It wasn't always this slow (used to be 1 minute at most). I discovered it one day after restarting from hibernation.

You log is clean and you seem to take care of your pc. :) However I have a feeling it's the Zone Alarm suite, Windows Defender, and the Google desktop search (an indexer) that is causing the delay. Try disabling those services and startup items and see what happens.

mine starts up in about .02 seconds, I just have to move the mouse...

really, why turn it off if you don't need to? I use Suspend and Hibernate on my lappy all the time, and only reboot ~ once a week.

GET RID OF GOOGLE DESKTOP SEARCH .. it's a performance hog, and practically useless.

I like google the search engine, but you don't need any of their crap on your pc.

SERIOUSLY, if you can't find something on your own PC without using a third-party search engine, you need better organizational skills.

Anyhow, google desktop search probably piggybacked on the install for something else, I rarely meet someone who actually wanted it.

Caps won't make you right. I've switched to MS desktop search myself, but both Google and MS desktop searches use little to no resources and are very useful.

My organizational skills are just fine. Maybe I'm using my computer more than you and simply have more data? :)

That is definitely slow. Now mine is a bit faster than usual since I formatted about 3 weeks ago, but within a couple of seconds of seeing the desktop, it is completely loaded and I can use stuff without waiting for additional background processes to load. I'd say from the time I hit the power button to the time I can use the desktop is definitely under a minute, but I'll have to time that. XP boots ridiculously fast compared to most OSes, especially 2k. I start up nothing essentially. Well I believe there is a couple of Nvidia Forceware entries that need to start up, and possibly a Creative Labs entry. And it was nice this time to have found Foxit, so this install will never get that Adobe Reader crap. I just make sure any programs I install do not auto-start, unless as said the required driver components sometimes have ones that need to. But I'll always make sure "never start" is checked when possible for things like Daemon Tools, Java Console, IM, Winamp, hell everything. All of those things can be loaded in a couple seconds if I need them anyway. For maintenance like anti-virus, defrag, and ad-ware scan, I just start them manually once a month or two.

eh...don't know about you, but I have actually hit the LIMIT on Google's desktop search, because I store so much freaking email...and trying to find an email from 2 months ago from someone you don't remember their name or subject is pretty hard...searching for a string I happen to know is in there and Google desktop pulled it right up and saved me tons of time. Outlook is slow and has crappy built in search.

Too bad their's a hard limit to the number of items Google will index, as I hit that limit, and then uninstalled it because it made me angry :D

Aye, if Google Desktop Search is useful to you, I yield easily ;)

If you don't need it, it should be the first thing to go however.

I've had complaints from users regarding poor system performance, and quite often, just by removing GDS alone .. the system returns to normal. Bug? I'm not sure, haven't spent that much time dealing with it.

Personally, I have a streamlined folder system for my data, and store email in similar fashion. Takes me less than 5 seconds to launch any app/file I want, and probably less than 15 seconds to locate a particular email.

Admittedly, GDS will help in situations where you have a vast volume of email. And yes, Outlook's built-in search is atrocious.

And at least I don't CAPS LOCK MY ENTIRE POSTS :)

I see...I am starting to think it might have to do with Trillian Pro and ZA Pro...I am going to try disable Trillian Pro and see what happens.

I'm just a hair onder 10K items in my inbox/archived inbox (and I have about 12 rules to move mail to different folders on incoming, so all my spam type auto messages/mailing lists don't count toward that total). Of course, I have less then 1% of that in my home inbox, and don't run GDS there (does it run on Deb?)
