How fast is my system

I have a Q6600 and set it for an 8x multiplier and 400 bus speed. I would expect this to give me 3200mhz but Core Temp and My computer say 3.6mhz..

Which is it? They all seem to have their own opinion on my FSB setting as well.
 
It's tricky, try searching on this forum or on google about the multiplier NOT sticking. I think I read about intel software or something, or microsoft software, simply assuming a 9 multiplier with the q6600.

An easy way would be to manually set it at 3.2ghz with 8x400, then look at temps, then do 9x356 and look at temps again. Btw, why are you running 8x400, you do know it's putting extra stress on your motherboard, northbridge, and doesn't gain you any speed? 9x356 sounds better to me.

Well I figured it would be best to run the memory at 800 since that is what it is rated for.
 
Well games and other applications don't give a rats ass so why should you? You have some extra memory bandwith that can't/won't be used. I can't get all technical here, but tests simply showed that 8*400 performed the same in a lot of apps/games as 9*356 would, same goes for other clock speeds that are made out of different multipliers.

It's the same as sticking ddr2 533mhz in a PC with a q6600, it will be as fast as a PC with ddr2 800mhz and a q6600, at stock speeds of course. That's because the FSB of the chip is 1066, and the ddr2 533mhz can supply it with all the bandwith it needs, seeing as it's double data rate, and thus is a match for 1066fsb speeds. Same goes for ddr2 667mhz and 1333fsb chips. Funny thing is, those higher FSB speed chips aren't even really faster then their lower fsb counterparts.
 
OK well I went and and clocked it at 9x400 and core temp and the bios seem to be in agreement. So if that is right 3.6 is a pretty sweet overclock.

Well if I am using it properly it has not crashed after twenty minutes (still going). It is still red.

I ran SETI@home all night without any trouble.

I think it would go farther but I am at 9x400 and 400 is all that my memory is rated for.
 
Did you run orthos and watch temps? You don't want temps going much above 60c, especially if you leave it on overnight, to find it switched of or throttling when you wake up because it was overheating 😛
 
wow nice chip! just like my xeon 3060! it wont stop going higher...i left it at 3.6 and it can go higher. im sure it needs higher rated memory or something.

This is the max it will run stable. I think it could go a little bit faster if I had some high speed RAM since it was necessary to increase to voltage (of the memory) to get this high.
 
I'll believe it when I see a screenshot of passed Prime95 ON ALL FOUR CORES.

This guy posted that he was running his chip at 4.55v on another thread, so I'll be surprised if he's actually stressing all four cores with his stability test.
