I have been using el cheapo s754 2800 sempron (256kb, integrated memory controller sans 64bit support) at 275*8 = 2200. Every thing was great except it would crash like once in a month when I leave it idle. Seeing how temeprature wasnt the issue here (never crashed while playing games), I suspected cheap ram I was using, doing cas3@228. I went back and changed the memory divider to run the cpu at 315*8 = 2520 with cas3@210 memory. The system hasnt crashed as of yet with some heavy gaming, so I am pretty confident I found a sweet spot.

What Mhz would this machine be equivalent in terms of A64 and P4 for gaming? My friends are curious and I would want some general guestimate. Thanks.

what are your memory timings? try lowering them, mostly its either the speed they are running at or the cas latency setting.

UPDATE : seems to be ok with 2.5 cas. 2 booted fine but would result in random opera & IE crashes.

Since no one else answered, I will give a rough estimation, maybe someone with some concrete benchmarks can verify. First of all the A64 with 512k L2 cache will be about 10% faster in everything then the 256k Sempron at the same speed. So that will give you about 2250MHz A64 speed.

The memory controller built into the cpu gives gaming a huge boost over a conventional P4 or XP/Barton. So I would guess your Sempron would compare to a 3.4-3.6GHz P4 for gaming. Amazing for a $75 processor, I am running two overclocked Sempron 2800+ myself.

You might want to run memtest and prime95 to guarantee stability on your set up.

Well, I just built a 2800+ sempron 64 system for a friend a couple of months ago. With the stock heatsink it would easily do 2.4GHz stable(maybe more...never tried) but with 3 512MB sticks of corsair value ram it wouldn't budge above 1.9GHz. For the money it's an awesome cpu. @ 2.4GHz it was scoring a little lower than a 939 3500+ on different cpu tests.

I would say yours @ 2.52GHz is probably equal to a A64 3500+ 939 in most situations.

thanks for the responses, I was guessing somewhere in between 3400+ ~ 3600+ region. The best part is I got this like last April for $80ish. Funny how the best bang for buck CPU didnt change much in pricing, what a true bargain it was back then :D

yeah true, but as long as it works for everything i do without crashing once... I guess I will do some further testing, havnt gotten a chance to give it a thorough testing just yet :)
