No something is very wrong.
My guess is that its not actually writing at 8X.

I can write a FULL DVD at 4X and it takes 15 minutes at 4X. So 8X should be around half that.

I know this because I only burn video on a dvd at 4X.

What Media?
What software using to burn?

Yeah thats odd.

Are you using the newest firmware for your drive?

Also If you have another type of burning software try that, Alcohol 120% maybe.
If you dont have that I think you can get a trial from there web site to try out and see if that works.

If not then its deffinatly the media, media is very perticular when it comes to the drive and how good the media is.

I only use Taiyo Yuden or Ritek media, best money can buy at a great price!
they burn at the rated speeds always.

If you want nero to show the actual burning speed, you'll have to make an adjustment in the windows registry:

(c/p from other forum: )

For Nero 6 follow this steps.

1. Start-> Run-> type Regedit

2. Go to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ahead\Nero - Burning Rom\Recorder"

3. Go to Edit-> New -> DWORD Value

4. Rename "New Value #1" to "ShowSingleRecorderSpeed"

5. Click on it and select "Modify"

6. Now set the value 0 to 1

To burn a dvd at 8x on my nec 3500 takes a little less than 10 minutes (including lead-out)

The speeds you can burn a dvd at is highly dependable on media compatibility with your burner. I haven't had problems yet with the media I use (platinum8x, fuji 4x, verbatim 4x, can't remember of the mediacode right now) With the firmware I use, the platinum disc can be burnt at 12x, the fuji's and verbatim at 8x without problems).
It could be your problem can be fixed with a firmware upgrade (there are a lot of 3rd party firmwares for nec drives aswell).

You should also check if the dma mode for your burner is enabled.

If possible, how would you do this for Nero 5.5?

Your burner is definitely not burning at 8x at that would mean a burn somewhere in the 8min mark. Two possibilities exist (1) that the media write strategy employed by your drive simply will not burn faster than 2.5x with this particular media or (2) DMA is not enabled. To be able to help you we need your full configuration info including motherboard and OS.

@MDE:
For Nero 5.5 the registry value should allready be there, you only have to set the value from 0 to 1

I fixed the problem.

I had the DVD drive on an IDE controller... the Maxtor 133 one that came with HDD's a while back... So i put it on the IDE controller on the motherboard.

Burning at 4x now... lets see if it goes up towards the end..

so i have it running 2x's as fast currently.. and hope all will work out fine :)

edit - burning at 6x

edit - burning at 8x.

problem has been fixed, moved from PCI ide controller to mobo controller (only took me like 7months to figure this out lol)
