How fast is a crusoe CPU really?

I'm looking at the Sony U3 subnotebook and it has a 933 Crusoe CPU. How fast does that go in comparison to a P3 933?

I remember that the TM5600s at 700 MHz were about equivalent to a 500 MHz Coppermine Pentium III at best.

The 933 MHz Crusoe (I think it is a TM5800) is probably about as fast as a 700-750 MHz Pentium III.

I would err on the lower end whenever you're talking about a Crusoe. I have an 800Mhz one in the Fujitsu Lifebook P2040 subnotebook and, though I love the thing, it is slow. It runs what I need it to though, and it's not too slow most of the time. It would probably be around P3 500-550 though some of the slowness could be attributed to the 4200rpm hard drive.

If you are planning on using the notebook for basic web surfing, email, office stuff, chatting, it will do. 🙂

I have the Compaq/HP tablet pc with the 1000mhz TM5800... Its speed was ok at first, but then after two PTT updates for windows, the speed has greatly improved. I would put it up there with a 733-800mhz p3.

The PTT is a service for windows that caches the translations to disk instead of just to limited memory space. It then re analyzes the code and translates it for better executation later, so essentially your programs will run faster after a few uses.

Wether or not your laptop manufacture will choose to put out updates for your computer for PTT is another question.
