How fast is a 7600GT compared to a 6800GT?

Hey all,

I am looking to buy a cheap vid card (either 7600GT or 7900GT) to hold me over 'til G80 on my late July Conroe build.

I came from a 6800GT - how much faster is a 7600GT than a 6800GT? Do the 7600GT overclock well? Do they suffer from the 7900GT bugs?

The 7600gt will get about 5 to 10 fps faster that a 6800gt and a 7900gt will get about 10fps to 20fps faster that that 7600gt. Anandtech has benchs of both that you can find under the video section.

I havent heard about any bad bins of 7600GTs... Although the 7900GT fiasco was localized to a bad batch of memory on evga cards only, and has been corrected.

As for performance, youre only looking at a 10-20% increase in new games, and nothing at all on older games. I would say just stay with your 6800GT until conroe.

The 7900GT would be a tangible bump (20-40%) but is priced pretty high for a short term upgrade before you upgrade again anyway.

Youll also lose some selling value if you resell it (7900) when the 8000 series is released, Nvidia generally releases the flagship 1st and works its way down to the cheaper cards within a few months.

I would just get a 7900gt, they are going for really cheap now (last week buy.com had it for 207 AR) and because waiting sucks, and you don't even know how long your gonna be waiting so you might as well enjoy yourself now, never know what might happen down the road.

^^ I think I'm gonna order the eVGA 7900GT KO 7900GT for $235ish AMIR. ^^

I might be waiting too long for G80. Well, I am prepared to deal with the RMA fiascos. I just cannot pass up this kind of performance for $235. Even if it takes a couple RMAs. Who knows I might be a lucky one who gets a good card.

And who knows, maybe G80 will be out in 3 months so I can Step-up.

Evga reported that during the problem they still had less than 2% of their cards RMAd...

And the problem was resolved a month ago. Its very unlikely youll have an issue.
