I notice certain printers say 20 ppm or whatever, but when I print something, even in black and white, it doesn't seem like it goes 20 ppm, but more like 5 ppm or something.

Is that true with the latest printers? They claim 20 ppm black or whatever and they still don't print that fast. What is criteria used to print 20 ppm? Do printer's really print that fast?

Would you really believe manufacturer's claims about their products?

I once had a printer that claimed 16ppm, but could barely do a single page in a minute...

This is gonna make me sound like a killjoy but my last printer was a little faster than the rating.

It was rated to around 12 pages a minute (1 every 5 seconds) but actually spat them out in 3 or 4 seconds.

Those max speeds are attained by plain text in draft mode. Most specs read "Up to nn ppm."

Our Lexmark Phaser 8850 can do 30ppm in colour. Once it gets printing, it spits them out like that. Solid Ink FTW.

My printer might take several seconds to warm up, but then it spits them out real fast...don't know what crap printers you guys are using, unless you're printing out elaborate, full page pictures...of which I don't know why you'd be doing that on a black and white laser printer and several pages worth...

I guess if I had to come up with an explanation it would be that people don't really care about their printer and just get whatever they can find free after rebate or comes with a computer deal or something. It's true the printer isn't the most glorious of peripherals but if you don't do your homework and research decent printers, you don't really have much room to complain.

You sure you don't mean Xerox? :D

I had the oportunity to install and use some Xerox Color Phasers, and they do indeed rock. Nothin' like that crayon smell during warm-up.
