How fast can you set the correct exposure on your SLR?

I went out shooting random shot in downtown LA this weekend (most people in sunlight), but found it so hard to set the correct exposure in a timely manner.

Often, I would loose the shot and got tempted to just set it into auto.

Even just shifting the camera slightly would throw off the meter and I would have to re-adjust the apt/shutter. arggggggggggg.....

Is it get better with time? Mannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn.....! :|
 
fast enough for football pics

I hate the delay of my digital camera...but SLR digitals are out of my price range
