How fast can you rip a song?

I was wondering how long it takes you to rip a song at 320kbps and with what kind of cd-rom. I used to be able to rip a song in about 30 seconds on my HP 8x cdrw but now it takes about a minute and a half.

Just tested it out for ya..

took me 15 seconds to rip and encode a 5min 30 sec song to 320kbps mp3

I was using my TDK 16x burner

I'm using a lite-on 48x. Five seconds to rip, but audio catylist takes about 45seconds to encode.

Im using AudioCatalyst, I think that you have it set to use an intermediate wave file..I turned that option off and now it encodes as it rips..much faster

its not about speed, but accuracy use eac, it basically double checks for perfection most any drive now can rip at insane speed and spit out cr@p there days

I wouldn't do it that way if it came out as crap..although it may not be the absolute highest quality, it is very much good enough for me

I've used three different cd drives and two different encoders. Audio Catylist creates superb mp3s regardless of the drives I use. Music match wasn't as good. Another my friend uses sux. Even though his are 192kbp they don't have the quality as some of my old 128s.

I think AudioCatalyst has very good quality, but I've never used eac so I can't really compare between the two

I have used EAC. I didn't notice it was any better than AC. I quit using it because it only rips. I still had to use a seperate encoder. Too much hassle.

audiocatylst is pretty low on the totem pole of ripper/encoders. probably near the worst really.
best combo is to encode using lame and rip with EAC.


well this site has info and tests, comparisons of mp3 encoders against lame etc.

the r3mix presets are not obsolete now though. for general use you don't need to add any settings at all

Well, I got into AC after CDex..which, in my opinion, was not very good at all..

On another note..try turning off the intermediate wav files because it is a LOT faster. Of course, if your comp can't handle it, you may get lower quality mp3s. I find that they come out perfectly though

edit: considering the above post.. I think i may give EAC a try

EAC site, has explanations of what it does, downloads etc it really does make an exact rip, ac does not.


as for straight to mp3 ripping, EAC now supports that using lame, very convenient. naming etc all included.

the only thing AC has for it was the user friendly interface from the start. leading to all the cr@ppy rips on the net

Anyone ever use CDex..have any opinions on it.. I was rather inexperienced when I found that one.. but either way I didn't like it..

LAME can be incorporated into EAC no problem, that's the way I rip everything.

I use EAC because it guarantees glitch-free rips, unlike any other ripper that I know of. I can't stand pops or glitches in mp3s, and I don't feel like sitting there and listening to every rip to verify that it's clean. There's a reason EAC/LAME is the standard for any release group that wants to be taken seriously.

just for the sake of it, I have never noticed any audibly inferior rips with my machine using AC..maybe it just takes a certain ingenuity to use AC right..

I've been using CDex for the past couple years. I haven't had any problems with the quality of the songs that I get from it, but it can be pretty finicky at times. What program that doesn't require a separate encoder would you guys suggest that's better?

Using EAC+LAME, fastest that I've ever got was 5X.

EDIT: Using Asus 8X DVD ROM (40X read). I don't mind the slow speed, I'm always certain my rips are perfect without needing to listen back to check for possible clicks/pops.

Using EAC with a 24X CD-ROM and then encoding with LAME -alt preset standard on a P3 1.1 with 256 megs of ram takes 30 minutes to get my mp3s.
