Hi,

I have a system with a MSI-6380 Mainboard with VIA266 (FSB 266 Mhz) chipset and currently an AMD ATHLON XP1800+ CPU
How can I determine how fast a CPU I can install on the current board and chipset?

Thanks

Stephen

Hmm

Help us out on the chip?

Looks kind of gray to me with that chipset if the chipset is a paly or tbred a.

Educated folks join in.

He actually means the cpu...Is it a .18 micron palomino athlon xp or a .13 micron Thoroughbred Athlon xp...And then from there whether the thoroughbred is a rev A or B...

Grap cpuid or cpu-z-116 and tell us the info on those programs..It will be key to see what it may or may not be compatable with now...

Well, my guess is that with APIC already installed, your fun is already in question as far as high OC'ing. Barring that, I'd wager a good solid 1800 mhz from the XP-1800 would not be difficult to hit with 1.85v on a KT266a and good cooling. The issues are that the Palomino 1800 is not considered to be a particularly good overclocker. Your board should handle a moderate bump in FSB. I haven't read many accounts of super high FSB on your particular board, but that's not to say you can't be the first.

Good luck!

Hi,

Thanks for your comments.
I am actually not thinking in terms of overclocking, but rather what is the fastest AMD CPU I can install on this motherboard?
As I see it I should be able to upgrade to a AMD Throughbread 2400+ working with FSB at 266 Mhz, but that is also the limit since the board does not seem to work with a higher FSB speed.

Is this correctly understood?

Cheers

yes

if it supports up to 2400+ then i'd go with that.. assuming that it doesn't do well with high fsb like you stated

Alright, Thanks

I had overlooked their reference page there.

Appreciate your help (although disappointing news)

Cheers
