If it's still frozen, it should last for awhile. If it's thawed in the fridge, only a couple of days.

Until it turns dark gray/brown, and/or is furry.

meat, as long as its frozen solid lasts a long time. i mean long time. i mean we sold the restaurant, took stuff out of the freezer from 6 months before, left it in another freezer for a while and ate it w/out any problems.

bacteria just cant grow at 0. you might have a harder time chewing thru it though.

Since it's been frozen, I would say it's good for about a year or so.

I have defrosted hamburger meat, chicken, pork chops and steaks that have been frozen for 4 months or more and it's always been fine.

    Some rules:

    1. Once it's defrosted, you either must cook it immediately or throw it away. NO refreezing is allowed.
    2. If you are going to freeze meat, do it right after you get it home from the store or right after you slaughter it. If it sits in the fridge for a week, you'll be freezing bad bacteria that may come back to haunt you later.

So, if your meat has been good and frozen (then it's time to get a GF...hahahah!) and you thaw it out and plan on cooking it immediately, you will have no probs.

cook it up and feed a little to the dog/cat

if they won't eat it, perhaps you shouldn't either

If it smells bad, don't eat it.

If it's a little old, but doesen't smell bad, and you're really paranoid.. just cook it well. :)

Oh, if it's been frozen it's fine.. as long as it's not all freezer burned..

As long as the meat doesn't get above 40F you can refreeze it (or if you can still find ice crystals in it). The USDA says it'll probably taste like pooh, but is still safe to eat :p

Depends on the type of meat how long it will last in the freezer.

If there is a lot of freezer burn I would throw it. Also when you defrost it or start to cook it if there is any foul odor then def. throw it away.

If you let me know the kind of meat I can tell you how long in the freezer it will last. Also was it a deep freeze or just the normal fridge freeze?

There are too many variables to say 'meat is safe to eat for x days' after the sell by date. The sell by date itself is only a guideline, not a law of physics. Hamburger is one of the easiest to tell by appearance and smell whether it is 'safe' to eat. When in doubt, throw it out.

Buy a new one. Dump the questionable one.

    Works well.

meat lasts a long time, sometimes we find beef in the bottom of the freezer thats been in there for like over a year.

As long as the color looks right, it should be fine.

Another note, I have never gotten sick from meat, and i do prefer to make sure its cooked medium well to well, which kills more bacteria than eating a rare steak.

FYI: there are zero laws/regulations for stores to abide by about "sell by" meat - meaning if they find meat expired they can repackage it as new and sell it with a different "sell by" date. I'm sure most people here have eaten meat that has had that done - I'm sure eating that meat won't kill you as long as you cook it fully.
