How far off is virtual reality in games?

I just watched Lawnmower Man and it got me thinking when we'll have some virtual reality like that. When, if ever, do you think we'll be really in the game?

hmm...give it another 10 years. Crap like that PS 9 commercial where the nanomachines/etc go into your brain so you feel everything, makes it real, etc...oh I dunno. We are straying so far from actualy reality, why? Mmm..the outdoors..the beauty of it all. Whats that? awww, your high tech graphics card cant render each indivdual blade of grass in vivid detail, every leaf, the veins on the leaf, sky, sun with golden rays upon your face or real snow in your hands? Yeah, thats what I thought bitch. umm..sorry, i got off track.

Heh. If you've ever seen Mindwarp, that proves a very real point. If virtual reality can seem so real that we could just live in a 5x5 room with another person and two machines that allow whatever your minds desire to do. Infinisyn I believe it was called. Cool movie, Bruce Campbell owns.

i can remember going to a games show a long time age and they had a racing game running in a vr suite, it looked like a snes (3d) game

What's really scary, we're probably only 4-5 years away from computer-generated graphics getting so lifelike that you really won't be able to tell the difference on a closeup. Imagine a virtual TV reporter, or a virtual State of the Union Address. How long will it be before hackers start generating their own 'news flash' reports and broadcasting them?

That all depends on how soon hackers take over a broadcast facility so they have access to the required equipment.

As for the Holodecks I don't want one unless they can fix the stability of those things. I mean if a PC game crashes or hangs the worst you'll have to do is a hard reboot. When the Holodeck screws up yer stuck in a life-threatening reality that always seems hell bent on killing you or the ship (or in this case yer house).
