how far from a firehydrant do you have to park in NYC?

I was visiting NYC and got a ticket for parking to close to a firehydrant. I was a little over 5 feet away from the hydrant. Does anyone know what the law is?

How close can I park to a fire hydrant without getting a ticket?

You must park at least 15 feet from either side of a hydrant. Note that the yellow lines painted on either side of a hydrant are not official markings and often extend less than the required 15 feet.

What is the point of the yellow lines if they don't need to be the correct lengeth?

That is a perfect example of how stupid the laws are these days.

From Jacksonville, Florida to New York City, New York is about 950 miles

usually stay away about 3/4 car length away from a hydrant.. 5 feet is way to close

yep! its true. i didnt know this and i parked near a fire hydrant (~ 6 feet away) but the curb wasnt painted yellow. guess what..i still got a ticket
