How far can you extend keyboard, mouse, and monitor?

If PC is downstairs, can I run extensions upstairs. Not looking for Remote Control, but actual direct connect peripherals.

Well I am on a ship in Russia and posting on a computer near Washington D.C. in the USA.

That's pretty damn far away. :p

Ok well RDP may not be the same thing but actual physical connections vary; I'd say 50 feet with no ancillary peripherals in between.

Extensions most likely, but I think signal loss and strength will be issues the further away you get...

You can get extenders too which amplify the signal mid way through. That should get you pretty far if you buy a dozen. :)

My brother has some KVM switches at work that use cat-5 for KVM extension. It doesn't actually use TCP/IP, so you can't run it through a network or anything like that, it just converts the monitor/etc. into a single RJ-45 jack at one end then back at the other end. Seems to work pretty well for relatively long distances to give you a hard connection to the server room (although it's probably not good for the full 100M of cat-5). It'd be a good excuse to wire your house for ethernet if you haven't already.

I could just see someone coming in and frying either my ethernet or my KVM by hooking up to wrong one.

LOL

I doubt that would happen, but that'd be kinda funny. You switch the KVM and LAN jacks around and your monitor just makes a loud degaussing WnnnnnnOW and never comes on again.

The whole VGA & PS/2 thing is getting pretty old. That would be great if someone would make a box that would transmit DVI/USB/1394 across cat-7. I would leave all my computers in a closet and just have a flat panel and a firewire DVD-RW on my desk.

Would Bluetooth work through the floor? You could get the Logitech desktop then just have nothing but a monitor extension if you did that.
