how far can an optical cable go?

i want to connect up my ps2 to my new logitech z5500 (very kick ass) and i want to use an optical cable. im going to have to run the cable about 12 feet and im wondering if thats too far for an optical cable to go. because i have been told that an optical cable signal strength is not very strong and anything over a specific length needs to have a power booster.
anyways, do you think i will be alright running it the 12 feet or so?

you should be fine. optical is actually much better over distances than coax.

In theory optical is lossless so it shouldn't be a problem.

hell if CAT5 does about 100 meters ~ 300 feet, you should be ok

There's a reason they bury fiber optic cable instead of coaxial cable.
Go ahead and run one to the moon, you shouldn't notice any problems (well, except the whole rotation-of-earth-and-moon thing)

I was watching THC the other night and they used an optical cable for the camera on the tail of that new huge jet (I am sure someone knows the name of it.)

We sell 25ft optical cables, so you shouldnt have any problems.

quick google search has fibre at about 60km ~ 37 miles.

Yeah, 12 feet is fine. I have my pooter hooked up to my HK AVR-325 on a 12 foot and it works very well.
