how exactly to set up (alot) of secure user accounts on windows 98, that work in the way of 2000?

the problem is that at my school, the music room computers only have 98. the option of upgradin like all the schools other cmputers is not there. at the moment there is no user accounts and all work is stored to the same folders. this means work can be deleted and altered, which is not good because GCSE work is composed on these and idiots do not keep backups on floppys hehe. the computers are not yet networked, but if they were, is there a way of setting up secure accounts, where each user hasthere own little folder that only them and admins can see?

honestly, no.

Find yourself a company that used to run NT and ask for their licences of it.

There are a few programs that allow you to modify 98 to make it "semi-secure" however anyone with a basic understanding of how 98 works will get right past it and mess things up more because they "defeated the system" (bastard kids).

Seriously, get NT/2K, it's not worth your time trying to impliment under win 98.

I didnt catch that last part, well you could:

get a NT/2K machine and set it up as a file server, setup ntfs/share permissions on the shared folders allowing access to individual resources so that they will have to enter their username/password onto the server to access it. it would require a login for each student on the "server" and would also be a pain, but it would be fairly secure...

Yeah, the only way of getting any kind of security on 98 is to use it as a client to a Win2k/NT server. It's quite secure when tweaked enough but you have to play around with Poledit and stuff to make it go.

I would recommend against 98 in a network environment if you can avoid it.

oh, i forgot to mention. these computers have no restrictions. they are left on all day, and anyone can change the settings, or delete the windows files if they wanted to.....

there is a room in the school with loads of spare parts and broken bits etc, that i may be able to scrape a fileserver together with if i can. is it that difficult? i think that is what they do on the rest of the schools computers, except they have windows 2000. the music teacher/techie as cheap and put pieces of crap together for music editing. 128 ram? lol what a joke
