How exactly does the internet work / what are the internet backbones?

Are there just a bunch of really powerful computers that are directly connected to each other with a really huge pipe, where all the ISP's connect to the backbones for access, then individuals connect to ISP's for a connection?

the internet is a large mesh of wires tied together spanning the globe, think of it as a large spider web. also go see The Warriors of the Net movie, pretty informative on that subject
