Items of "extraordinary value" depend on the carrier. Fed Ex for instance, pretty much states -- if you're dumb enough to ship something of extraordinary value with us, you deserve it -- and they're limiting it to 500.00 dollars. Extraordinary value means items that would need to be appraised (jewelry, art, antiques) or items that have values that change on a constant basis.

Other carriers you would have to fill out a manifest or document of the items description and the declared value.

So it depends heavily on the carrier. Though in general, if the items were not declared, the liability on the carrier will be limited. Mind you, it's also hard to put a value on family heirlooms. If you can't prove to the carrier that it's worth what you say it is, then you'll be SOL.

Sorry btu i don't understand shipping insurance. Thats liek them saying if you pay extra we promise to do what we said we do.

Its like having your autotech tell you for a extra $100 I will do the job right or for the orignal price I will kinda try.

I had a laptop with a CD drive get broken. Package was banged around, drive ejected, and it would not close again.

I found the most expensive drive I could...printed out the page I found it on, turned it in at the post office...and in like 4 weeks I got my check for $300.
