Does the power run through the battery? How does it instantly switch from wall power to battery power!?

Some have really quick switches and will switch to battery under certain conditions.

Others will let the power go through the battery and smooth out the voltage.

You give them a package and they drive it to the airport, it then goes on a plane and they fly it to your destination. Then they take it off the airplane and put it on truck and then drop it at your house.

Say what?

You try hooking up a 12VDC SLA to 120VAC and tell me what happens. :p

Edit: OK, OK.. perhaps you were trying to say that the UPS only uses the battery/inverter for powering devices plugged in, but the wall keeps the battery full.

it is an inverter, DC to AC circuit
the battery DC output is converted to an AC signal

a sensing circuit decides when to supplement or switch (depending on the type of UPS) the outlet power from the AC input to the AC output of the inverter
