How essential is paprika for making fried chicken?

I have no paprika. I always thought it was just for color, but I'd like to ask the culinary experts of ATOT. Can I just use hot chili powder?

Put it this way, it's not as essential as say...a heat source ;)

You'll be fine with chilli powder, in fact i'd prefer the hot chilli to paprika myself. If you've got a few other spices lying around throw them in too, i suggest sticking with savoury spices tho :)

I'm no culinary expert myself but I think chili powder would suffice as a substitute for paprika. Depending on your tastes you might want to reduce the amount called for.

Being a big manly man, I have no idea what the amount called for might be anyway. I'm going to add enough that the color looks good.

Paprika is pretty mild unless you use alot of it, so you shouldnt notice if you substatute.

Salt and pepper is the only seasoning allowed on fried chicken. Anything else, and it's not fried chicken.

How dare you disagree with the late, great Colonel Sanders and his secret recipe of eleven herbs and spices! :)

You have never tasted my momma's fried chicken. My wife has been working on it for 10 years and she still doesn't have it down.

Alright, I would really like to know what part of the country people live in who think paprika has anything to do with fried chicken?

Try this, marinate your chicken in buttermilk for at least an hour. Season your flour with salt and pepper and dredge the chicken. From here you can either fry as is or dip back in the buttermilk and roll in the 'crunch' of your choice (bread crumbs, panko, cornflakes etc.) then fry.

Da Chef bespeaks, so let it be written so, let it be done. :)

Most store bought paprika has almost no (or crappy) flavor. It is normally used only for color and a very mild taste. If you were to use paprika as a real seasoning agent for something like chicken paprikash, then you would use a different, usually imported, variety of paprika. I assume you don't have that kind of paprika because if you did, you would have known what it's for when you bought it

You don't need any spices at all to fry chicken, however you can use just about any spice you enjoy the flavor of... chili will work fine.
