Mystery to me.

It seemed at one time there was a way to flush caches and notify to turn the key on my hot-swap bay.

In my WHS-2011 box, once I exposed true AHCI 1.0 from PCI-E SATA controller cards, the icon replaced the "Hot!Swap" program icon for that useful piece of freeware. Hot!Swap is another issue, though, and deserves attention later.

But on my workstation Z68 motherboard with AHCI-mode in BIOS, no icon appears for my backup drive. Note that the drive was inserted and key-activated without any other procedure steps.

I want that icon and program functionality for use with my hot-swap backup disks and caddies. What do I need to do?

Right click on 'Start'
In the drop down menu choose 'Properties'
Click the 'Task Bar' tab
Click on 'Customize'
Scroll down till you see 'Safely Remove Hardware'
Click on the downward arrow to the right of it.
Select 'Always Show' then click ok (at the bottom of the window). The 'Safely Remove' icon should be back..

[Belch!] I'd taken a slightly different route leading to the same dialog windows. Last time I looked, the hot-swap drive of interest had been switched on and online. The icon appeared, but attempting to change its behavior resulted in a message about "next time it was active." So no cigar to that.

This time, the hot-swap drive is "off" and offline. So there's simply no "safely remove" icon in the window for customizing sys-tray icon behavior.

Sooner or later, we'll get this sorted out. Sooner or later -- one way or t'other.
