How effective are vehicle immobilizer systems?

I'm talking about the ones where the car won't start without the factory key. Key sends a code to the engine. Are thieves able to get around it?

Why would they need to? Most real thieves steal the car for the parts, not the sum of the parts.

i'm just wondering. I don't have a club or anything on my car. Just the immobilizer thing that it came with.
