I'm about to buy one of these guys and it doesnt seem like it's too much of an investment to upgrade the hard drive. They want to charge me $79 to go from a 4200 rpm :)|) 20 gig HD to a 5400 rpm :)D) 40 gig HD. That seems like a pretty good price. Or are they fleecing me? Should I try to do the upgrade to the 5400 RPM myself?

Thanks.

I don't think they are fleecing you at all. I used to have a compaq and I upgraded the 20 gb 4200 rpm hdd to a 40 gb 4200 rpm hdd after I had it for a few months and the 40 gb hdd cost 150, and then I just had a 20 gb hard drive that I had to try and get rid of.

If you already have the drive you could do it yourself. How to take out the HDD. After you take the HDD out, you will have to take it out of the carrier, which shouldnt be too hard (theres probably about 4 screws to take out). Once the HDD is out of the carrier you should see that it has an adapter attached to it. Take it off slowly so you dont bend any pins, and try not to squeeze the HDD too hard while your doing this. Once your done put every thing on the new drive, and hope it works. :)

Just upgrade to the 40GB 5400RPM HDD when you buy the computer. It's simpler that way in that you won't have to restore the OS and software to the new HDD you buy and install yourself. Also, +$79 doesn't seem like a rip off for that upgrade.

If you want to do it yourself, it should be very simple to purchase and install the HDD. It will just take a lot of time to actually restore the software, etc.
