How easy is it to install and manage a live email?

Hi,

I got some minor experience managing exchange, but I am far from email guy.

Long story short, I need to get an email setup in a ubuntu server environment.

Requirements:
- needs to work with pop and smtp (so outlook can connect)
- blackberry needs to be able to connect (which is using imap)
- Having a web UI would be a BIG plus.
- Big bonus: High security. Users should always connect using HTTPS to the server, and id like server to server SSL connection if the other server supports it. And other good security practices.

What good email server would you recommend for someone getting his feet yet (in other words, id rather there be a UI)?

Note: If I had time id test a bunch of these, but this is a time sensitive issue. Id rather get this up as quick as possible (no down time from previous host to new one) and dive into the technical stuff later.

How to set up gmail for your own domain.

If you're even asking about how to set up a secure email server, you probably shouldn't be doing it for clients.

I am a quick learner and love learning this stuff, but that is a fair point. I am going to go with namecheap private email (as I already host the website using VPS there). They also offer free 2 month + they are cheaper then google apps.... And if my 2 month trial reveals issues, then I know what google apps has to offer (as I use them myself for my own business).

All that being said, my current host for this client is web.com.... And based on my experience dealing with these people, I do not think its *POSSIBLE* for me to roll out a less secure email server even if Ive never done it before.

Some of my issues with web.com

- The password used to secure the account and FTP is not encrypted. In fact you need to say it over the phone to confirm you have access to the account.

- They installed the wrong intermediate cert, so many browsers could not access the site and many ssl validations flagged it as a broken SSL chain. Despite this (and me giving them this information, links to ssl documention, and even the right cert at one point) it took them 2 weeks of back and forth arguing with me telling me everything is fine (and overall +3 weeks of downtime). At one point they even got smug and told me to contact the ssl company itself if I had issues (they of course they confirmed 100% everything I said). Eventually, web.com installed the right cert, never updated the ticket, never sent me an email, never called, and never apologized for being wrong and giving us downtime...

- email does not support encryption. Not in the webmail or with pop/imap/smtp...

- They only offer TLS 1, they refuse to install TSL 1.1 or TSL1.2, they tell me its impossible.

Anyway, enough of the mini rant. I will be so happy to move away from those clowns.

If you have a decent number of users, you'll want to look into spam/av firewall appliances. Running an Email server isn't cheap and you need a good network firewall and plenty of knowledge of how to secure your Email server... (force authentication, turn off open relay, understand proper backup/archiving policies, etc)

It's not something to be taken lightly, but if you have the time and money...go for it.
