I heard it was easy if you stay to the tourist destinations, but knowing even a bit of French works wonders for your overall image.

Edit: Didn't see 6 months. Yeah, um, I'd brush up on a bit and make every effort to learn the language when you're over there.

If it's for 6 months, I'd pick up a book.....you could get by a few weeks with English. Where you going to?

LOL, are you serious. The French are one of the most arrogant nations on Earth.....They HATE speaking anything but French. View people who attempt to speak French with contempt and well generally, they suck.....
So, I would only speak English to them.....just to piss them off.

Spain however, is a general lack of eduction in the rural areas so more differcult, however alot more friendly than the French

Most French people are not as rude as the rap that they get, especially if you aren't in Paris.

That said, if you don't even bother to learn a bit of French and just expect everyone to know English, you will probably deserve some of the remarks that you will get. :p

I know a person I met while in India who lives in Nice that I'd like to visit. I'd also like to go to Paris.

Other than that, anywhere I end up along the way...

If you're gonna be around for 6 motnhs, you should try to learn it. You can learn a lot of the language if you're there for 6 months.

I'd try learning more french before deciding to randomly take a trip to france for 6 months. I know a little bit, but nothing terribly useful. But I have issues with the written english language half the time, I don't even try to write in french. Reading it isn't isn't so bad though(I was going through the campus library at ASU with some friends who were doing research, and some of the books were in french, so I opened them up and started rambling off what they said, and translating what I knew, mostly to annoy them.)

they would probably be nicer about speaking english to you than an american would be about speaking french to a frenchman in america... but that dosetn say much. If you are going to toursit type areas they will speak english very well, but if you plan on spending 6 months there you should really try to learn some french!!!

it will be difficult. the french are arrrogant (srry but it's true) and don't like to speak english. i went over to switzerland (about 15 minutes from france into a gas station) and the clerk didn't understand a word of english i said (and i don't have the funny israeli accent in english) so i used the very limited french i remembered from school.

if you're going for 6 month, learning the language is a must. ppl will appreciate your effort.
