How easily does a CD player break?

I just got the Panasonic SL-SX420 yesterday, pic here and I didn't have enough money with me so I turned down the extended warranty. How easy would you say it is for a CD player like this to break without obvious physical damage like dropping it or sitting on it or anything like that? I like this thing because I think it's actually pretty good for its super low price tag of $60 ($100 CND).

The guy at the store said I couldn't buy the warranty later if I changed my mind, but I COULD return the product. That doesn't really make sense since wouldn't that mean I could just return the thing, buy a new one, and get extended warranty with that? They'd probably be pretty annoyed if I did that, but couldn't I?

Well, I got a CD player, it's been dropped about 3 foot probably at least a dozen times, and knocked because I keep it in my school bag which sometimes gets thrown about.
Probably used 30mins a day, 5 days a week, 40 weeks a year minimum.
The only problem was that a small plastic thing broke off, which was a problem as it was the bit that told the CD player the lid was closed, some matchsticks fixed that.
I don't think an extended warrenty is needed really.

cd players dont break all that often, especially for 60 bucks, you dont have that much to worry about. how much was the extended warranty? if its more than 15 bucks i wouldnt touch it considering the player itself is only 60.

I've used a portable CD player (Philips, I think..heh) in the rain before..and it's still working...I don't exactly treat it like glass..and it works =)

Long as you got a good brand (and you did with panasonic) you have nothing to worry about, unless you consistantly leave it out in the elements (extreme cold/heat)

I usually have a cd-player keel out on me after 2 to 3 or so years of use, but this was back when I was in school doing sports and using it on the run all the time(with the occasional drop here and there). If your easy on it it'll last a very long time.

Well as long as nothings defective in it, it will last you a long time. Some things work perfect out of the box but just something on the laser could be slightly off from the others causing it to die quicker(on down the road). If something does die it will most likely be the laser more than anything.

I wouldnt worrie about it though. If it dies in 2-3 months put it on ebay as-is and get what you can get out of it then start over.

Yep, and even if you did, the'll just come up with a BS reason not to replace it or repair it.

The warranty is $14 canadian, $9 US. Not much to pay, that's what it costs me every day for dinner lunch and bus tickets. If it's going to protect me from a laser realignment or a broken headphone jack, I'd be willing to pay for it... but I'm guessing from what you guys are saying that that kind of stuff doesn't happen to panasonic if it doesn't go through really rough use.
