Maybe they meant large in a symbolic sense. One could interpret as the most obese state, the one with biggest land area, the most patriotic, the biggest in terms of electoral votes, the biggest GDP.

I am assuming far too much from FF contestants

Maybe they left it purposefully vague to allow for interpretation of "largest" to mean most population or perhaps "economically largest" or something, so it could have multiple right answers.

With the question worded that way it can be assumed to mean land area. It's a quasi trick question because Texas is known for being big.

Since you seem like you are speaking from a high horse...

That could be interpreted many different ways. Financiallym New York would be the answer. Electoral College votes, California is the biggest state.
