How does your employer handle travel time for hourly workers?

Suppose an hourly worker had to travel to a place where travel time was significant. How does your employer (how yourself if you are the boss/owner) handle the situation? For discussion sake lets consider this example:

Monday: Hourly employee flies from home to a far-away destination (flight left in the morning)
Tuesday: Hourly employee arrives at that destination (lets say you arrive late in the evening, ~24 hours flight time plus there was a time zone change).
Wednesday: Hourly employee works 8 hours.
Thursday: Hourly employee works 8 hours.
Friday: Hourly employee flies home and arrives late Friday evening (~24 hours flight time minus time zone change).

Summary, the hourly employee worked 16 hours but was away from normal work for 40 hours and away from home for 108 hours. Which number does your employer use for pay?

A-hole I work for doesn't even give vacation.

My first thought was this employee would be salary. But assuming, should get paid for all hours job related including travel, imo.

My manager allows me to bill hours from doorstep to doorstep for air travel (that's home to hotel), then doorstep to doorstep for hotel to worksite.

When in town, I bill hours straight from 7:30am till 5:30pm with a 30min mandatory lunch interval, unless I work overtime, in which case the finishing time will depend on whatever time I arrive at my doorstep at the end of the day.

On the work orders I write up, however, I only bill the actual hours I travel from my point of origination that day -- be it home or hotel. I also bill return travel hours, unless I have another job afterwards, in which case I bill the travel to it on the next work order.

Travel time was work time when I was hourly. The only difference was if you worked in a state that counted overtime as any hours over 8 in a day the travel time did not count towards that 8 hours.

I read the thread title originally as "How does your employer handle time travel for hourly workers?" I was going to make the obligatory Doctor Who reference, but...

Moment you leave the hotel till the moment you enter the hotel. Meals included.

Was nice when I'd leave the hotel at 6AM and get back at midnight due to hitting a bar. 18 hours on the time card.

Now I'm a sucker (salary) worker, though.. no more easy overtime. =(

So 8+(16*1.5)

Get paid for travel time since I am hourly. When I used to be salary just sucked it up. It can get a little confusing when you are crossing time zones.

For example I had to travel to Austin, Texas for training recently. Flew out of Orange County on Sunday and got into Round Rock late Sunday afternoon. Got paid for the time from my house to the hotel in Round Rock. Same thing on Friday when I left in the Afternoon Got paid all the way to my house. Made over 10+ hours of OT that week just in travel time.

for us salaried folks, I'd get the regular paycheck, meals paid, travel expenses paid, and I'd probably take some unofficial comp time (a Friday off when schedule allows, etc.)

I don't get per diem, but otherwise this is how it is for me. Then again, I've only traveled once for this company.
