How about a guess? Memory addresses put aside by the bios that are connected to analog-to-digital converters connected to the thermistor. The hardware monitor accesses these addresses the same way the bios does.
I thought that the electrical resistance of the sensor varied with temperature & this variation with a small current running thru the sensor was used to give a reading! could be completely mistaken here.
