How does vcore lower CPU Temp?

The reason I ask this is because in this thread: http://subscriber.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=28&threadid=777063 , I noticed the first response asked what the originator was running his vcore at. I ask because I have an XP 1800+ and I feel the temp is a bit high and the summer has only begun. I tried www.google.com but I can't make any sense of most of the results 😱 Any help would be appreciated 🙂 Thanks for your time.

lower vcore=lower temp. The system might become unstable if you reduce the vcore without reducing the speed though.

Does a lower vcore make my rig slower at running programs such as SETI? Or as long as my rig is stable, I'm running on full crunching power? 😕

I lowered my vcore roughly .10v. It yielded a roughly 3 degree drop with no decrease in performance. I'm not ocing by the way.

if your system is still stable with the lower vcore you're still running full bore
the more voltage you're running through a chip, the more heat it produces, within the same architecture of course
try bumping your vcore down a notch and then run some stability tests..lather rinse repeat until you hit the lowest vcore your chip will run stably at at stock speed
if you still ned more heat reduction, you could unlock it and lower the multiplier or lower your fsb a bit...but you will be losing performance then
what's your case fan setup and what hs and fan are you running?
changing your cooling system could be a better option that won't cost you any performance and will generally improve your stability

Well I was able to lower the vcore to 1.65 w/o any stability problems. As for my cooling nemo160, I have the XP 1800+ w/ the stock HS and fan, an 80mm intake on the front of my case, an 80mm intake on the side of my case over the CPU and an 80mm exhaust in the rear of my case. That's all the fans my rig can hold w/o modding it. I'm looking into changing the stock HS and fan w/ a better performing option, but I'm still reading up on that 🙂

glad to hear the undervolting worked for you
i have an sk-6 with a delta 38, keeps my tbird nice and cool...runs about 30-35(ambient temp has been varying pretty wildly here lately) 37 running rc5
it runs between 6-8 degrees higher than case temp on my 1.4 tbird
my reccomendations are sk-6, slk600 or slk 800, or an alpha 8045 or 6045
not the cheapest, but all very good hsfs....the 8045 and slk 800 use 80mm fans, so you could either go for extreme performance with a high speed 80mm or go with a slower 80 that still keeps it nice and cool but is quieter, like a panaflo

nemo160, thanks for the sugestions, I'm not looking for the cheapest HS, just something that will hold up to the temps here in NYC during the summer. A HS that takes an 80mm fan is just what I'm looking for as I can use a quiet fan that pushes a lot of air. I would go for a Panaflo on the HS, but I have yet to find an 80mm Panaflo that has RPM sensing capability. This is something my MB requires because if it doesn't sense a CPU fan, it shuts down my system down.

edit: Can't spell 🙁
