How does Valve's "steam" work?

How exactly are there 680,000 people online if people like myself can't gete the program to stop crashing...

I click "browse games" and it crashes...same goes for "play now"

All my other games work fine and my stuff is up to date.....shrug...steam was pretty decent when I instaleld it once after launch

Did not have a problem with it when I last tried it.

Recommendation: reboot, relogin. See if steam updates (it did for me today, also found out counter-strike:source is not available to buy...no way am I buying it, not wasting another 5 years of my life playing that game)

I almost bought HL right now just so I'd have something to play. Is CS: Source worth paying $60 for?

Don't know, don't care

seen a few screen shots.

doesn't really say much about the game, guess you'll have to find out for yourself.

Mind you, Counter-strike has been popular for probably over 6 years. So they must be doing something right!

I know this is an old thread, but is there an advantage to ordering the cd's of he valve premier pack and the HL2 from the ati promos. I really don't like tying this game to someones streaming content. The whole idea that the games just "magically" appear in your folder (from ati desc) frankly is control creepy. Plus the bug factor seems higher. I mean if you are not logged into valve can you even play the game? Are the cd's different or are the valve required also?

You can play in "offline mode" if you want. Steam is a great idea but Valve's execution was a bit off.

I don't have a problem with it. I guess if I ever owned a laptop and wanted to play HL2 single player, I would want the offline mode, but otherwise I have no problem logging in. Ever since I bought HL2 silver and installed Steam, it's worked flawlessly everytime. I'm on Xmas break right now and decided to bring my computer home so I could play HL2, but even if I didn't it's great that with just my login and password I could come home to this computer and download it all and play. I'm surprised how fast the whole game downloaded too. Thumbs up to Valve. With a few changes, I would like to see this Steam technology with other new games (not just Valve).

Steam works fine for me, I only had problems with it when it first came out. Now that they got it running good it is a really good idea but they still have a few bugs to work out.

In theory, it's a great idea. In practice... well, I can't play CS anymore because of it. And I have a valid CD key. Damn you Valve!
