How Does USPS Know If Something Qualifies for Media Rate?

I have a big package, about 5 pounds.. last time I was charged $17 to mail it.

If I went ahead and said "please mail this media rate," would it have worked?

They have the right to open it at any time, as well as damage it if you didn't insure or even toss the whole thing in trash, just to get even with you.

Both Best Buy and buy.com has sent me mice, keyboards, and gamepads using media mail.

They have no idea, mail whatever you want but prep yourself for a whining recipient.

its got to at least resemble media from the size/weight.

 

And shape. Don't expect to send a speaker system and tell the guy at the counter that it's a box full of books. They will look at you VERY strangely.
