How does USPS Delivery Confirmation work exactly?

I've never used USPS delivery confirmation before, but I currently have 2 transactions in progress, one shipped to me, and one I shipped elsewhere. Both are using DC. But I find it weird how both are going so far.

Both items were shipped on Tuesday. On the package that is being sent to me, the DC number shows that the item was accepted in NC on Tuesday, but that's where it was shipped from, and it's coming to KY. It has yet to change. And the package I shipped on Tuesday afternoon is not even showing up at all in their system.

Does this DC stuff work? Is it only a delivery confirmation system, or is it supposed to also be a tracking system to rival UPS and FedEx?
 
It's not detailed tracking like UPS' or FedEx. It just shows that it was delivered to the PO and then I believe delivered to the recepient.
 
ive found it to sometimes "track" a package and sometimes it only appears when the package is delivered. It kinda wierd and i guess its based on the hubs it goes through...most of the time its ment only as a confirmation service though
 
Thanks for the info guys. I've sent out some RAM to a buyer in the FS/FT forums, and I believe he's concerned since the delivery confirmation # I gave him isn't working. Good to know that it's not reliable for the future.
 
IF you generATe the DC electronically, the PO may not log it until delivery.

You have to ensure that they san the number when theitem is turned over the the PO.

Also, the PO signing off on the DC does not actually mean that it was turned over to the recipient.

It means that the PO attempted to deliver it to the proper address. I have had packages that could not fit in a mail box, supposedly be DC. Only when I raised a stink, did the items surface (where from?) about 2 weeks later.

I usually send items DC and toss in the insurance. The PO does not want to lose an item then.
You can not track insurance on line, but if the DC is not validated, you can fight it and win.

true but who want to spend 1.80 more? and is a little more inconvenient if someone has to be home to sign for it
