How does this system look?

I'm building a new system to keep at home and I want to get some last minute opinions before ordering. I will be ordering it Tuesday night. Let me know if anything should be changed. I will be ordering from MWave.

AMD Athlon 1.4GHz Retail Boxed
MSI K7T266 Pro
512MB Kingston DDR RAM
ATI Radeon 8500 (Already ordered from Dell)
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz (I would get the Audigy if I thought it would work!)
D-Link DFE-530TX+
Creative 56K Modem Blaster (already have)
Seagate Barracuda 40GB and 80GB HDs
Sony 1.44MB Floppy
Lite On 16X DVD
Lite On 16/10/40 CD-RW
Inwin S500 Mid-Tower Case
Sparkle 300W Power Supply (already have)
Mitsumi Keyboard
MS Intellimouse Optical
Samsung Syncmaster 900IFT (alread have, Thank you Dell)
APC Back-UPS Pro 650 (see above)
Benwin Speakers (already have)

Only one thing to say....

IWANTIT! 😉

One point: I have the Sparkle 300 as well for my 800@1000 and have installed tons of them....but...I might consider jumping to a 350-400 or so for the 1.4G + any OC'ng and extra peripherals. (more piece of mind)

I already have the power supply. I will get a bigger one if this one does not work. I have no intention of overclocking so that won't be a problem. Currently I am running a 1.2GHz system with that PS and it works fine so I'm not too worried.

How about getting OEM T-bird instead of Retail then get a better HSF? Are those Barracudas the 10Krpm kind? Then maybe some HD coolers? I was thinking about getting a Lite-On DVD & a CD-R as well, they have good favorable reviews.

I was also using a 300w Sparkle PSU when I upgraded to a 1.4GHz T-bird. It was worked fine, then I visited Virtual Hideout's gallery of modded cases. I had to mod my case after that😀. So I went and ordered an Enlight 7237 with a 400w Antec psu & some fans/grills.

what about the Althon XP?? I'm sure the 1.4TB will be fine and they are cheaper... but you ever think about getting the XP processor?

<< Are those Barracudas the 10Krpm kind? >>

No, they're the 7200RPM IDE ones. 10KRPM IDE... I wish!

<< Get an XP instead. >>

What is the difference? I don't see them for sale (I need to order it today). Is there some major difference that justifies a higher price?

aren't the XPs easier to OC? because they stay cool better. That would be the reason I would get one over the 1.4Tb.

Plus the benches in the new AT article put the all the XPs over the 1.4TB.

If you're not gonna overclock then why not get the ECS K7S5A,this way you'll be able to buy & use the audigy & have money left over.🙂

MWink, you should be able to run Wordpad at light speed! Imagine how fast calculator will solve complex addition. And just think about Zork! Better run it in a scrolling window!

Speaking of windows, you should be able to be up and running in under 30 seconds when you have to reboot windows (like when you connect a joystick or install any software).

In all seriousness, looks like a phat system.

Reasons I will not buy that ECS board:

1. Never hear of them.
2. Not for sale at MWave.
3. I swore I would NEVER buy another SIS based MB (The last SIS based board made my life a living h3!!)

Regarding the Athlon XP, does anyone know where to buy one NOW?

Ok, regarding the Athlon XP, do they need a certain chipset or mother board? Will they work with the VIA KT266? How about the KT266A? Also, what HSF would be a good choice? I it to be as quiet and cheap as possible. I might consider the XP 1600+ but I'm not sure yet.

in Anands review of the XP he used a EPoX EP-8KHA+ board, which uses the VIA KT266 CHIPSET [edit]not the VIA KT133A chipset as pointed out..sorry..[edit]

<< in Anands review of the XP he used a EPoX EP-8KHA+ board, which uses the VIA KT133A chipset. >>

that board uses the kt266a chipset, not the kt133a

i agree, u'r power supply seems underpowered unless you buy the AthlonXP 1.4Ghz which would use the power equivalent to 1.1Ghz tbird which is feasible.

:disgust:
Whats wrong with the SIS board? Its had excellent reviews so far, and it looks like SIS is doin' a job on INTEL with their new 645 chipset. I think SIS is doing an excellent job. In fact, i'm ordering a 735 next week.

Give it a chance man..
