well, my friend wanted me to build him "the best" system. he said money isnt an option. this is what i have decided so far:

Intel P4 3.00CGhz [800] *Retail* 512K $ 621.92
Kingston 512Mb DDR [433] Hyper-X times 2 $ 220.48
$ 220.48
Antec PLUS1080AMG Soho File Server Case [430W] $ 208.69
Western Digital Caviar 80.0Gb ATA/100 7200RPM 8Mb Cache $ 125.84
ATI Radeon 9800Pro 128Mb [TV Out] *RETAIL* $ 615.94
Asus P4C800-DX (5PCI) i875P ATX [S478] $ 281.84
DVD-Rom Liteon 16X DVD $ 48.56
Recorder LG 52x/24x/52x $ 60.86
Lecteur 1.44Mb 3 1/2 $ 12.38
----------
$2416.99

questions: does this mobo have good onboard sound? if not, what sound card do u suggest (dont really have to go too overboard on this)
also, need some suggestions on the speakers and the monitor. i havent been following lcd's lately, are they better for gaming than they were before? which would a game look better on, an lcd or a crt?
looking for a 19 inch monitor

I'd get 1 GB of RAM rather than 512 MB

If he really wants "the best" you should use a SCSI controller and HD as well. At the VERY least get him a WD Raptor SATA HD - that board has support for up to 4 SATA devices.

I agree with the prices you quote. WAAAY too high, unless you're out of the US.

oh yes i forgot to say, its CAD, and i included 2x512 mb of ram into the price (notice the second 220$, ill move it to the column of prices)

als, these prices are from a local store, www.shoplci.com , where he can get a bit of a discount

Why not get SATA and go with a Raptor as a boot drive, then get a nice 120-200gig storage drive. Replace the CD burner with a DVD/CD Burner. If gameing is a main concern, and with that system it would appear that it is, I would go with a nice 19-21" CRT.

I wouldn't call that "the best system" but it's still a hell of a system that should last a good amount of time. Does this person know much about computers, the best system could be taken many different ways by different people lol

I would get an Audigy 2 sound card. Also I would get a regular 9800 Pro, they are around $400. And that Antec case is awesome (I use it too), but you can get it for $120 + $18 shipping from newegg.

Are you going to be doing any overclocking on this machine for him?

Grab a 2.8C.

There is no need for the Deluxe version of that Asus board unless you put some of those extras to use, the SATA for example..

A 36 gig Raptor along with a 120 gig WD SE 8megger should be good...

I would go for a 9800 np and overclock that also...

my suggestions:
-get 1 GB of ram, if you're gonna get a system that good, might as well go for a whole gig too

-get the sony e440 19" CRT, its pretty dang good trinitron for 300-- i wouldn't get an LCD for gaming, the response times just aren't there right now and the non-ghosting LCDs are way too expensive

Grab a 2.8C.

Question: Does the 2.8 overclock better? I mean let's say the 2.8 can go to 3.0 does that mean a 3.0 could go to 3.2? Or does it not work like that at all?
