How does this socket 478 heatsink go on?

I'm guessing you're missing a bag of parts that goes with this to add clips, as well as the instructions.

Yeah, I think DaveSimmons is right. You should have mounting screws/clips and a retention bracket with that, along with some generic thermal paste and an instruction booklet on how to install it.

Thats what I was afraid of. I bought this heat sink in a box that didn't come with anything else, including instructions and or retaining clips or anything. What would cause cooler master to sell such a worthless product.

What is a good affordable non overclocking heatsink/fan for a 478 socket?

They probably don't.

Did you look at the pictures at newegg to see what's normally shipped with it?

Did you buy this "open box"? If not, send Cooler Master an email.
