Recently, my EVGA 7900GT CO Superclocked started overheating and artifacting. Sent it in and now EVGA is sending me an 8600GTS.

This is what I had:
256-P2-N565-AX

http://evga.com/products/pdf/256-P2-N565.pdf (PDF File) - Paid $359.00 for this card when it came out on Newegg.

This is what they're sending me:
256-P2-N761-AR

http://evga.com/products/moreinfo.asp?pn=256-P2-N761-AR - Didn't pay anything for it, but it's ~ $189.99 on Newegg right now.

Ok, so the card I'm getting back doesn't perform as well as my 7900GT CO Superclocked that died.

Should I call them up and ask them to send me something that's at least equal to the 7900GT CO Superclocked?

I just noticed that the memory bandwidth for the 7900GT is much higher than this 8600GTS's.

Evga listed the MSRP of that card at 299$
In fairness I think we all believed the 8600GTS would have been => then the last generation mid-high end card like the 7600GT replaced the 6800GT. Unfortunatly due to lack of competition this did not occur.
However the 8600 is great for HTPC machines.

When they do replacements like this, do they take into account what you originally paid for the card?

Well I called them today and the customer service person I spoke to was an @ss. I spoke to him politely and explained that the 8600GTS they sent me is not equal to the 7900GT CO Superclocked I RMA'd to them. I gave them links to reviews from places like AT, HardOCP, etc. and gave them numbers from my own benchmarks and even explained to them what I found personally from trying an 8600GTS.

The guy was a jerk and said that he doesn't need to look at reviews and that the 8600GTS is far superior because of its "unified shaders" and "DX10 capabilities". What should I do now?

Ok so I finally just got the manager after calling a couple of times trying to get him. The manager said that the best they could do is send me an 8600GTS Superclocked. I have tried an 8600GTS with similar clocks as EVGA superclocked model and it still didn't perform as well as the 7900GT CO Superclocked. I asked them if they could just repair my 7900GT CO Superclocked and sent it back to me, but they said they can't do that.

I guess I'll take this 8600GTS Superclocked.

That's a scam. If you have the time, I say you keep trying and threaten to never buy from them again. Also, threaten to tell other people not to buy from them again. If this is how their 'guarantees/warranties' are, forget them, lot of others offer similar warranties with the same reference cards...

Keep complaining till they give a 8800gts320. Someone else in the EVGA forums complained till he got one for a similar card. Show what you payed for your card and what the 320 sells for now, send reciepts and make a stink on their forums as well since they seem to reply to bad publicity. Dont take this laying down! They are in breach of their warranty if they do not give you something that is either the same or comparable.

It offers more features, but it is slower at offering performance in gaming. And it looks like its going to suck at DX10 anyway considering how the faster cards are doing at DX10 so far.

Ok, the manager called back and said they hadn't gotten to my issue yet since today is their "inventory" day. He said that they'd get back to me on Monday and that they may possibly give me a 320MB 8800GTS. That's more than I expected, but I'm not complaining. Now I just have to find a single slot cooling solution for it.

The more i learn about eVGA & their supposedly amazing warranties, the happier i am i did not buy an eVGA 8800 GTX.

Keep complaining indeed, and give them the url to this thread :) If something breaks down, under warranty, they have to either replace it with the very same product, or something that performs similar, and be used in a similar way, in essence, a pci-e card if the previous one was pci-e as well.

Let us know how it worked out, I'm curious to know wether you did get that 8800gts 320.

I'll be calling them up again on Monday to see what they've decided. I did explain to the manager that I originally paid ~$350 for the 7900GT CO Superclocked (back when it was released) at Newegg and that the 8600GTS doesn't even have close to the memory bandwith the 7900GT CO Superclocked had. I pointed out to him that Newegg has this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814130071

at the same price and that to be fair they could at least send me the Superclocked 8600GTS since that's closer to my 7900GT CO Superclocked than the vanilla 8600GTS is. He said there was no way they could send me the 640MB 8800GTS, but the 320MB 8800GTS is a possiblity.

Ya, I'm starting to think that my next card will be from XFX instead of another eVGA.

Nothing. They probably just sent you the closest performing card they had to your 7900GT Superclocked. They probably have a cheat sheet. "RMA'd 7900GT's, if cannot be replaced with same, get 8600GTS's" Maybe this cheat sheet was made by someone who really didn't know how to match up cards performance based.. And to top it off, you spoke with a jerk initially. There are jerks in every company (they are usually just unhappy people) but you just need to call and get someone else.

I RMA'd a 5900nu to eVGA and they sent me a 5900Ultra to replace it. Just keep trying to get the 8800GTS320. Far superior card to your 7900GT. You should definitely not accept a slower card for your replacement, even if it has more features. You bought the card primarily for gaming, so thats what matters most. Not how many shaders or what kind of shaders they are. Bottom line. Performance.

Good Luck.

This is why nVIDIA needs to release that "card" between the 8600GTS and 8800GTS 320mb. Aka G80 or 8800GS with 64 shaders, 256bit memory interface and 256mb of memory or something around that.

Wow this does fall below what I've come to expect from eVGA's warranty service. And even in the end, if they send you the faster card - you still had to deal with all this hassle.

Crucial has won me as a customer for life with their fantastic warranty service. They have not only RMA'd 3 sets of bad memory, they sent me an upgrade from PC6400 to PC8500 because the tech guy said he thought it would work better in my setup. These days, good warranty service makes or breaks a company.

Here's hoping that eVGA doesn't start looking like PNY.
