The way I see it, meaning and purpose in my life is defined by the people around me and not an external force. It doesnt matter how we came to be here - whether it was survival of the fittest or a supernatural being - it matters what we do.

If learning that everything was random robbed me of purpose, I'd question whether I had any to begin with.

It's basically what progressives have been saying for years. You have to start from the lower levels and work up to understand how to paint a great picture.

Trickle down does not work in economics and trickle down does not work in nature.

That is what this theory says.

This theory overemphasizes the utility function of genes. There is the mistaken assumption that DNA is some discrete unique entity, distinct from the rest of the physical universe, when in reality it is an amalgamation of basic physical and chemical processes.

So if meaning and purpose were defined by utility function, then you would be forced to say that even DNA has no utility function and that all of reality is just the perceived effect of basic physical principles.

So if all of reality can be reduced to basic physical processes and there is no utility function in anything, why do humans continually seek out "meaning" and "purpose"?

Because people are dumb enough to think there is "meaning" and "purpose" other than to reproduce.
