Is there a trick or tool needed to get a BIOS chip off the MB? It's a Soyo 6VBA 133 if that's needed, with the Award BIOS.

umm.. i guess if you HAD to remove it, you could use one of those old socket cpu remover things to pry it out, but i'm not sure removing bios is a good thing to do, don't know if you can just stick a new one back in :) and i know it won't turn on without it.

Just pry it off using a small flat object shuch as a small screwdriver. You should be able to pry the screwdriver underneath the bios chip at the short sides of the bios socket. But carefull not to bend the pins at the bottom of the chip too much as they might breake - ( tried that once - had to use 30$ for a new chip :()

carefully pry it off with something flat, or go buy a chip extractor (which is equally a pain in the azz). basically as long as you dont break any of the pins, you're ok. careful though, once bent they are very very very very flimsy and will break VERY easily. It's only a little stronger than friggin aluminum foil ;P

Whenever I pull a chip out of a socket, I like to pull one end up a ways, then do the other. If you just pull the chip left to right, the pins bend and are a pain to straigten. Another way to do it is (you do this more after desoldering though) to using an EXACTO knife to get under the chip at the right side, pull some pins, then go to the left and pull somemore. But if you are pulling a BIOS and I assume you have another, you won't need to be that careful with the old one. If you ever want to use it again, follow basic ESD procedures, and don't drop it on the carpet ;-)
