How does the Turion64 X2 TL-52 compare to my old Pentium M?

Just curious what kind of speed increase would be likely going from a Centrino Pentium M 1.6ghz to a dual core Turion TL-52?

turion is faster and dual core also. im pretty sure u wont feel the increase unless u benchmark it tho. but 1 thing ill say the HEAT must be killer. cuz my tl-50 gets so freaking hot. like 80 degrees load . but 1 plus about the centrino is u can lower the volts and 1 plus about the amd is u can overclock it using ntune assuming the chipset is nvidia correct?

yea, im thinking about replacing my T41 with a hp tx1000z tablet and they only come with amd chips.

Hmmm, I would say they are pretty close, but obviously the TL-52 has the Pentium M beat in any multithreaded appilications.

the dual core aspect will be really nice for a laptop, and if it were me i'd go with that...but since you already have the pentium m...i wouldn't unless the new one is gonna be a significant step up (bigger and/or faster hard drive, more RAM, better cd drive, etc etc).

The Turion will be quite a bit faster, esp for multitasking.

IMO It would be a nice jump.

From what i can tell, the Turion X2 series, performance wise, lies somewhere between the Core Duo and the Core 2 Duo, correct?

Clock per clock the Core Duo and the Turion X2 are even overall give or take, Core Duo wins due to sheer clockspeed at the upper range with 2.33GHZ maximum.

I moved from a 1.8Ghz Pentium-M, to a Turion 2.0Ghz (MK-36, Single-core), and performance DROPPED noticeably. Other aspects of the hardware were similar (nice Intel 915 chipset to nice Nvidia 6150 chipset, etc)

I'd say for most things, you won't notice any difference, but with multi-threaded apps you'll see a big boost. You certainly won't regret it.

Doh, forgot to mention, the Pentium-M I had was equipped w/2mb L2 Cache, and my new slow Turion only has 256k :'( I regret selling my old lappy now, should have just bought a new burner and battery. Ah well.

The X2 should at least be equal/faster than your 1.6 however, so still a good upgrade for you.

P-M's effiency is basically on par with K8 single core operations. I read a nice article before but forgot where it is now.

Core Duo is already a bit faster than Turion X2 at the same frequency. When gaming benchmark is run, the advantage of large L2 will be more clear on CoreDuo.
Toms benchmark

So basically, in OP's case, no noticable gain unless in heavy multi-threading cases.

actually i was sad about my battery life when i got my new amd laptop but then i realized i didnt have a big battery at all. i have like a 6 cell compared to all of the 9 cell dells i had. so its about the same battery life.
