How does the post office work?

When you send mail, do they have people read each address or do they have a machine that does it? what if you handprint the address and it can't read? ....anyone know of any websites that could show me?

Much of the hand printed stuff can be read by a computer. That which cannot is hand sorted.

My MIL works for the PO.
