How does the forums tracking user online/offline?

I was thinking about this as I missed a PM (didn't refresh or click on another thread) and hopped to another URL on the browser.

How long does it assume I'm still logged into the forums? How does it monitor your status?

from what I understand the system cycles every 15 minutes, so the longest that you are "online" when your really not, is 15 min. I hope that answers your Question.

But what kind of activities "refreshes" your online status?
I assume writing to it is one, but does reading or refreshing the forum considered as an activity too?

Well since there are customizations for the forums it probably reads a cookie and takes inventory of your HDD every so often. Well atleast the cookie thing.
